Honored to receive the John W. Copeland Social Impact Award

John W. Copeland Social Impact Award

I am incredibly humbled and honored to receive the 2026 John W. Copeland Social Impact Award from the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit.

This recognition carries special meaning because it represents the values I strive to live by every day: servant leadership, inclusion, community engagement, and a commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.

Named in honor of John W. Copeland, a trailblazer who helped advance integration and equitable access within the Detroit YMCA, this award celebrates individuals who are building stronger, more inclusive communities through service and leadership.

Throughout my journey as an educator, author, motivational speaker, and Director of Grand Valley State University's TRIO Upward Bound Detroit program, I have remained committed to creating opportunities for young people, strengthening community partnerships, and helping others recognize their potential.

I am grateful to the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit, its leadership team, my family, colleagues, and community partners who continue to inspire and support this work. It was especially meaningful to share this moment with my wife, Sharnese, and our daughter, Gabriella.

I accept this recognition with gratitude and a renewed commitment to the work ahead. Ultimately, the greatest reward is not the recognition we receive, but the lives we touch and the difference we make along the way.
