I was honored to serve as the keynote speaker for Henry Ford College's 4th Annual Black Male Retention, Success, and Best Practices Conference in April 2023. The opportunity brought together more than 230 attendees representing 18 universities and community organizations for meaningful conversations centered on education, empowerment, and student success.
During my keynote address, I shared my personal journey and challenged attendees to rethink the labels placed on young people. Rather than describing students as "at-risk," I encouraged everyone to recognize that our young people are "at-promise" and deserve guidance, encouragement, and opportunities to succeed. I also challenged students to trust their process, embrace their growth, and never give up on their dreams.
The experience was especially meaningful as I received the Henry Ford College Sankofa Award and Ujima Award in recognition of my commitment to educational equity, community service, and collective responsibility.
I am grateful to Dr. Kalvin DaRonne Harvell and Henry Ford College for the invitation and for creating spaces that celebrate Black male achievement, leadership, and success.
